My grandma grew up here and funnily enough my husbands gran also did. I wonder if they knew each other. One grew up at Pennington farm and the other in Little Scotland which I believe is in Blackrod, but it says Aspull on the censuses. One was Elizabeth Moore, (mine) and the other Eva Molyneux.

Hello from Texas from a Higham, Hughes and Lea family member. Was able to visit Wigan and Aspull the last time I saw my grandparents.... Harold and Jane Higham. Your town is beautiful with much history. I posted a message on your chat board...looking for information on my family.

Hi there!

I am interested to know if anyone knows where catholics born before Our Lady's church was erected in 1854 were christened? I've hit a brick wall in my Family tree with my ancestor, James Moore born 1805 in Blackrod.

Also, does anyone know the history of the Red Lion pub in Aspull. Apparently it was referred to at some point as "The pub of old Joes" - Apparently one of my ancestors owned the pub a long time ago. His name was Joseph (we are not sure whether he was a Moore or an Unsworth)

Thank you for any help given. It would be very much appreciated!
Helen.

I am looking for any information about my gran - Jane Gregory, who lived on Scot Lane, Aspull. She was in service at Haigh Hall in the late 1920s.
Does anyone have a relative, or know of anyone, who also worked there at this time?

Hi, I've been researching my family history and have discovered at least four generations were born and raised in Aspull. My great great grandfather was Alfred Leigh (born 1856) who kept a shop at 28 Higher gullet (now Bolton Rd). Also related through marriage to the Atherton's and the Rigby's. Would be fascinated to hear from anyone still in Aspull with these surnames. The site is great!
